FOCUS: “The White Family” by Carl Kiilsgaard

“Carl Kiilsgaard, born August 26th, 1986, in Corvallis, Or. is the son of two plant ecologists and a lover of life. Having found his calling as a photographer four years ago, Carl’s camera has allowed him to travel all over the USA, from Napa, Ca., to Palm Beach, Fl., and many places in between. Carl has used his camera as a tool to meet people, experience life, and he hopes to one day affect social change in a positive way. Besides photography Carl enjoys music, his friends and family, Dries Van Noten, porches with beer in the late afternoon, and chasing the dream.”
Carl Kiilsgaard website

“The 2000 census found that nearly 23 percent of families living in Letcher County, Ky., fell below the poverty line. The median household income in most counties is at or below $25,000, with individuals making on average $12,000 a year.
(…)
For more than three years I have documented rural poverty in eastern Kentucky through the eyes of the White family. Their roots in Whitesburg run deep through the generations and into the depths of the mines. Richard White, his wife Tammy, their three children, and Richard’s nephew Derrick Collins all live together in a mobile home. The son of a coal miner, Richard has experienced the problems of eastern Kentucky firsthand.”
